I think the Google acquisition of Motorola was precisely due to the amount of patents that Motorola had in the portfolio. Although Google started creating its own mobile hardware, I think acquiring Motorola was half just to make sure it could protect Android, which runs on devices including Samsung, HTC, and LG. I believe the Nortel purchase galvanized them to make the decision to acquire Motorola. However, I do think that the major drop off in price makes it seem that Google didn't particularly want the company and was only using it for a short-while till it could until they could find someone else who would want it. Interesting nevertheless!
